Driving in Melbourne Drivers license in Melbourne
You need a valid drivers licence to drive legally in Melbourne. If you have an
overseas driver licence or interstate drivers licence, you will need to change
it to a Victorian Melbourne driver licence if intend to stay permanently.

If you are visiting Melbourne on a temporary visa, you can drive on your
overseas driver licence for as long as it is current providing it is in English or
accompanied by an English translation or International Driving Permit. In
such case, there is no requirement to get a Victorian driver licence.

However, if you have entered Melbourne Australia on a permanent visa, you
may drive on your overseas driver licence for:

1- six months from the date you first entered Australia if the permanent visa
was issued before you entered Australia; or,
2-six months from the date when the permanent visa was issued to you if the
permanent visa was issued to you whilst in Australia.

Please note that If you want to continue driving in Melbourne Victoria after this
time you must change your overseas licence to a Victorian driver licence.
New Zealander who hold a current licence are treated as interstate drivers.

To obtain a Victorian full driver licence you must have held and provide
evidence that you have held an overseas driver licence for at least three
years from your 18th birthday. Your overseas driver licence must be current
or not expired by more than five years. Any period where you have been
suspended or disqualified from driving is excluded when calculating the
period of time you have held a licence.

What so ever your drivers licence status is, please consul the official
www.vicroads.vic.gov.au website for the latest or official advice.

To obtain Victorian driver licence (full or probationary) you need to make an
appointment to undertake a road law knowledge test, hazard perception test
(HPT), eyesight test and a drive test (unless you are exempt from the test -
see 'Exemptions from licence tests' below) at a VicRoads Customer Service
Centre. You must complete and pass the road law knowledge test and
hazard perception test before you attempt the drive test.

If you hold a driver licence from one of the following countries you are not
required to undertake any tests provided your overseas licence is current or
not expired by more than five years. However, you still need to make an
appointment to changeover your licence if you are from a recognised country.

Melbourne as a city is divided into simple grids plan that is well sign posted.
Melbourne has three major freeways: the West Gate, the Monash and the
Tullamarine. They are conveniently linked by CityLink which a non-stop
expressway. In Melbourne as in all other Australian cities, you drive on the
left-hand side of the road. You must also wear a seatbelt as well as all other
passengers.
